WG208 Report Released! Planning for Automation of Container Terminals

Planning for Automation of Container Terminals

Congratulations to all involved including PIANC ANZ contributors Carsten Varming and Tom Condie (YP Member)  for the latest PIANC Report MarCom WG208, which analyses state-of-the-art and best practices when planning for automation in container terminals.

For Carsten, Port Development Manager at NSW Ports, being part of this global working group was a valuable and rewarding experience. ”I met some great people with intimate knowledge of container terminal automation,” he said. Our YP representative on the WG Tom Condie, Principal Maritime Engineer at WSP, echoed Carsten’s sentiments, saying it was “a great experience.”

About WG208: Digitisation and decarbonisation are disrupting the supply chain, and consequently transport infrastructure. Technological developments are, at the same time, creating attractive but non-standardised opportunities for automation.

The report provides advice and guidance for port stakeholders in the planning process and the specific considerations with regards to automation.

Five interrelated chapters deal with:

  • Semi-Automated and Automated Terminals:
  • Developing a Business Case for Automation:
  • Planning for Automation:
  • Integration:
  • Engineering, Implementation and Operation.
