About the event:
Port stakeholders are engaged in an ongoing search for ways to boost productivity and operational efficiency, meanwhile environmental pressures increase, and container traffic keeps growing.
As a result, technological innovations have led to the use of automated container handling equipment and systems, at an increasing number of container terminals. These automated operational and handling systems require a higher capital cost than conventional terminals, but may bring benefits like improved productivity, lower labour and operating costs, and a greater degree of safety and reliability.
Planning for automation is becoming a natural process in the transition towards more sustainable and resilient supply chains.
PIANC recently issued Working Group Report No.208 – Planning for Automation of Container Terminals.
This seminar will be presented by several authors of the report who will analyse state-of-the-art and best practices when planning for automation in container terminals.
The aim is to provide an outline of PIANC Report 208 with advice and guidance for port stakeholders in the planning process and the specific considerations with regards to automation. It will create an opportunity for different stakeholders to discuss and exchange the ideas surrounding the automation of container terminals in Australia.
Speakers:
Tom Ward – Director US Maritime Planning, WSP
Carsten Varming – Port Development Manager, NSW Ports
Tom Crawford-Condie – Principal Maritime Engineer, WSP
Michael Houen – Director, Smart Port Strategy, Hatch
