PIANC’s ‘Design Principles for Dry Bulk Marine Terminals’ has just been released – congratulations to the Working Group 184 for producing this excellent report. Great to see such a strong contribution from PIANC Australia & New Zealand to the international body of knowledge.

There were five Australian contributors to the report, which is very relevant for Australian conditions. Well done Richard Morgan, who chaired the group, Grace Go, Peter Kastrup, Bob Lamont-Smith and Ross Newcombe.

Seaborne dry bulk trade was 4.3 billion tonnes in 2017, resulting in nearly 38 billion tonne-km of seaborne trade, and accounting for some 35% of world seaborne trade. By weight, shipping of the three main dry bulk materials (iron ore, coal, and grain) represented about 27 % of the world seaborne trade in 2017.

Trade in these three commodities has increased rapidly this century – from 2.0 billion tonnes in 1999 to 3.2 billion in 2017. Much of the growth has been driven by Chinese demand for iron ore and coal.

Recently, the market has shown a trend for both increasingly larger terminals as well as small specialised terminals for specific locations. PIANC’s WG 184 has produced an up-to-date planning and design reference guide covering current technology, vessel types, and bulk handling equipment.

The report includes guidance on: Terminal location and type, Vessel handling and mooring, Required water depths, Cargo hazard, management, Materials handling equipment, Ship loading and unloading, Out-loading or receival facilities, Storage facilities, Processing and post-processing, Operational considerations, Transhipment, Social and environmental considerations and Impact of climate change.
