YP-Com Korea Seminar Success

“I couldn’t imagine that I would be this active person!” declared YP-Com Asia-Pacific seminar co-organiser Julie Jiyoun Kim. “All was possible because of my great friends all over the world; Japan, China, Malaysia, Philippines, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, Iran, USA and Belgium.”

The PIANC Young Professional Commission (YP-Com) 3rd Asia-Pacific Seminar was held in Korea between Oct 29 and Nov 1, 2018, attended by 55 young professionals from 10 countries throughout the region.

Dr Tom Shand, YP-Com Vice-Chair for the Asia-Pacific Region, was there to represent PIANC Australia-New Zealand. Tom found the seminar to be “excellent in terms of its technical content, interesting site visits and opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with young professional delegates from across the region.”

Also attending was the YP Commission Chair Mr Andrew Thomas and Honorary Secretary-General of PIANC Mr Louis Van Schel.

Seoul & Busan Events

The four day seminar began in Seoul, Korea with a day of technical presentations and keynote speakers followed by a technical tour and cruise dinner, sponsored by K-Water, along the Gyeong-In Ara Waterway.

After the next morning’s networking event bowling in downtown Seoul, the seminar delegates took a high-speed train to Busan, a coastal city on the southern coast of Korea.

The following day a workshop was held at the Busan International Passenger Terminal focussing on the challenges faced by YP-Com sections in the Asia-Pacific region and identifying potential solutions.

After a seminar by the Busan Port Authority technical tours were held around Busan Harbour by boat and to Busan New Port by Bus. “We were lucky enough,” said Tom, “to be allowed to park on an inoperative part of the quay wall and observe the world’s 5th largest container port in operation.” A conference dinner sponsored by Busan Port Authority was held at MokJanWon overlooking Busan Bay.

The final day included a tour of the Korean Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST) and the Korea National Maritime Museum.

Local organisation builds PIANC in Korea

Tom commended the local organisers Julie Kim, Deokhee Won and Minwook Kim for putting on such an excellent event. Julie was equally enthusiastic. “Workshops, seminars, technical tours and sports activity have not only influenced my networks but also my way of thinking. From this point I am sure YP of Korea as well as PIANC Korea will be activated. So proud of you guys!”

Next YP-COM Event

The next regional YP-Com event will be the 7th Biennial Technical Visit (BTV) to be held in Singapore in June 2019. All YPs very welcome!
