SUMMARY:State of Ocean Energy in Australia - FREE Webinar 5 Aug 2021
DESCRIPTION:PIANC NSW Chapter invites you to an online technical event on\nOcean Energy in Australia. \nThursday 5 August 2021 5.30pm – 7pm AEST \nA recording of this webinar is now available online.\nThe session includes presentations by three leading Australian researchers and industry experts discussing subjects including Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) in Australia\, offshore energy and opportunities in the Great Southern Coast and Wave Swell Technology. \nThis is a FREE Event but REGISTRATIONS are essential. \nAny enquiries about registrations\, please contact:\nShahab.Hosseini@ghd.com or kenan.aldemir@wsp.com \n\nPresentations: \nFrancois Flocard – Marine Renewable Energies (MRE): While solar and wind are clear leaders in Australia’s current renewable market. Marine Renewable Energies (MRE)\, i.e. tidal\, marine currents and wave energy\, could become an additional solution for the future Australian renewable mix. \nAustralia’s coasts are home to the world’s best wave energy resource in the south\, while the north\, with its large tidal ranges\, is ideal for the implementation of tidal energy projects. MRE have seen major developments in Australia in the last two years\, both in the research sphere and industry-led projects. \nThis talk will introduce the audience to the marine renewable resources around our coasts and their specificities. It will also provide a snapshot of the main technologies under development around the world as well as the different activities currently happening around Australia. \nChristophe Gaudin – Offshore energy and opportunities: The mitigation of the impact of climate change on our coasts and oceans requires a rapid decarbonisation of our economy with engagement at all levels of society\, from communities\, regions and governments\, to numerous other stakeholders across the public and private sectors. \nOffshore renewable energy has a huge potential to accelerate this decarbonisation across multiscale solutions\, from supply to the grid\, to micro-grid powered infrastructures\, trough hydrogen or ammonia generation. \nThis presentation will examine the opportunities within Australia\, with an emphasis on the Great Southern Coast and for Albany to become a world leader in offshore marine renewable energy. \nTom Denniss – Wave Swell Energy Ltd has developed a unique technology that converts the energy in ocean waves into electricity. \nThis presentation will describe the technology\, its potential\, the company’s current project at King Island in Bass Strait\, and the various applications of the technology\, including its ability to double as part of a breakwater or seawall\, thereby providing protection against coastal erosion and/or a safe harbour facility. \nThis is a FREE Event but REGISTRATIONS are essential. \n\nAbout Our Speakers \n\nDr Francois Flocard \nPrincipal Engineer\, UNSW Water Research Laboratory \nFrancois is an expert in the field of renewable ocean wave energy; he has managed the installation of a 250 kW pilot device in Victoria and led several large studies related to wave dynamics and wave energy conversion processes over the last 15 years. He has also worked on projects in the fields of coastal hazards\, coastal structures\, climate change adaptation\, physical and numerical modelling\, and coastal monitoring. Francois is actively involved in collaborative research work (author of over 20 peer-reviewed publications) related to the assessment of climate change effects in the coastal zone as well as innovative coastal protection solutions and wave energy. \n  \nProfessor Christophe Gaudin \nProfessor of Offshore Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Western Australia \nChristophe has 20 years of experience with the offshore oil and gas industry. Over the last 5 years\, Christophe has redirected his research effort towards offshore renewables\, pursuing scientific interests and becoming acutely aware of the imperative for renewable energy and its potential for the Australian economy. He is currently leading several multidisciplinary projects with wave\, tidal and offshore wind industry partners\, domestically and internationally. He is the founding and current Director of the Wave Energy Research Centre and the Head of the ocean engineering group at the University of Western Australia. \n  \nDr Tom Denniss \nExecutive Chair\, Wave Swell Energy Ltd \nTom has a PhD in Mathematics and Oceanography. Tom invented the technology of WSE. He has served as the Australian government’s representative on the International Energy Agency’s Ocean Energy Systems Executive Committee\, as well as on the Global Roundtable on Climate Change\, an initiative of the Special Adviser to the Secretary General of the United Nations. Tom was the first person to be inducted into the International Ocean Energy Hall of Fame in 2007 and has served on the Australian Government’s Advisory Board for the Clean Energy Innovation Centre and the CSIRO Advisory Committee for the Australian Wave Energy Atlas Project. As Chair of WSE\, Tom’s board responsibilities include technology and strategy. \n
