SUMMARY:PIANC WA - COOGEE MARITIME TRAIL BREAKFAST 30 March 2021
DESCRIPTION:The PIANC WA Chapter\, Subcon and the City of Cockburn invite PIANC members to a briefing on the Coogee Maritime Trail and a free BBQ breakfast. \nThe trail applies Subcon’s Integrated Artificial Reef concept to Coastal Developments. It demonstrates how owners of coastal infrastructure can create facilities that promote community wellbeing and cohesion\, integrate into the natural environment and promote fisheries abundance. \n Attendees may wish to bring a snorkel and experience the dive trail between 0800 and 0830am (before breakfast!). The underwater trail begins in shallow water while its westernmost extent reaches a maximum depth of 7 metres. Most of the trail is around 2.5 to 5 metres deep\, making it suitable for snorkelers and novice divers. \nLocated only 25 metres from the shore\, the dive and snorkel trail encompasses WA’s premier shore-based shipwreck\, the Omeo and nearly 70 purpose built reef habitats\, ranging in height from 1m to 5m tall. The unique sections create a complex reef that includes lots of cave-like spaces to support fish\, crays and molluscs and are great for snorkelling! \nClick on these links for more information about Subcon and the dive trail \nThis event is FREE for PIANC members and employees of PIANC member organisations but registrations are ESSENTIAL via Eventbrite \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/coogee-maritime-trail-breakfast-tickets-146312634027 \nFurther enquiries regarding the event to adam.vanderbeeke@fremantleports.com.au \nTo become a PIANC member visit pianc.org.au \nDownload the event flyer here.  \nSpecial thanks to event sponsors City of Cockburn and Subcon. \n

SUMMARY:The Future of Physical Modelling an EA/PIANC Online Seminar 10 Dec 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Role Of Physical Modelling In Today’s World – Dr Steven Hughes\nCoastal and port engineers rely on four complimentary tools for the development of robust\, functioning projects: theoretical analyses\, numerical modeling\, physical modeling\, and field measurements. From the early days of coastal and port engineering physical modeling (including laboratory experimentation) has played a major role in advancing understanding and in effective design and construction. \nIt is important for experienced engineers\, as well as younger members of the profession and decision makers to at least understand both the advantages and limitations of physical models. \nThis webinar\, hosted by the National Committee Coastal and Ocean Engineering\, PIANC Australia and New Zealand\, and Engineers Australia\, will examine the role of physical modeling in today’s world with a look toward the future. After a short introduction describing the underlying principles of physical modeling\, typical modern-day model uses will be discussed\, along with specific examples of how physical models contributed to successful projects. We will explore current worldwide trends in physical modeling that illustrate the continued importance of this engineering tool. \nFrom there\, we will step back from physical modeling and share opinions on several challenges faced by coastal and port engineers now and in the future. These topics include: climate change; maintaining the knowledge base; erosion of expertise; and perhaps most importantly\, learning from engineering practitioners. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. \n  \nSpeaker: Dr. Steven A. Hughes \nDr. Steven A. Hughes was awarded this year the 2020 John G. Moffatt-Frank E. Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award for his definitive contribution over 47 years to the field of harbor and coastal engineering across research\, investigations\, design and construction. \nDr. Hughes has been the consummate public servant as a research engineer\, applications engineer and educator. He is considered a top tier coastal engineer and scientist throughout the international engineering community. His book “Physical Models and Laboratory Techniques in Coastal Engineering” published in 1993 remains a definitive reference for practicing coastal and port professionals. \nDr. Hughes has attained numerous accolades throughout his esteemed career with the US Army Corps of Engineers. In 2017 Steve was inducted into the Waterways Experiment Station Gallery of Distinguished Employees\, one of the highest honours bestowed on only a few of the USACE research community.

SUMMARY:PIANC APAC 2020 - Pre-Conference Symposium: Nature-based Solutions 1 Dec 2020
DESCRIPTION:Pre-APAC 2020 Conference Symposium:\nNature-based Solutions for Coasts\, Ports\, and Estuaries\nDate: 1 December 2020\nTime: 0830 – 1730 AWST\nVenue: Esplanade Hotel Fremantle (WA participants)\,\nLive Streamed (non-WA participants)\nProtecting populations and infrastructure within our coasts\, ports and estuaries is a major challenge in this era of rapid environmental change. To address this challenge\, in recent years there has been growing focus on adopting nature-based solutions in flooding and erosion risk management projects. \nThese solutions use natural processes and ecosystems\, to provide an alternative\,’ green infrastructure’\, form of protection. Such ecosystems include reefs\, wetlands\, submerged aquatic vegetation\, mangroves\, as well as hybrid approaches that integrate both traditional and nature-based approaches. \nThis exciting Symposium will bring together a range of multi-disciplinary groups\, including engineering\, planning\, restoration ecology\, resource economics\, and policy experts\, to discuss recent international developments in successful nature-based solutions for coastal\, port and estuary applications. \nThe Symposium will highlight the latest innovations worldwide\, lessons learnt\, and implementation challenges from users across a spectrum of backgrounds – from researchers to practitioners to end users. It will provide essential knowledge and leadership for the future. \nThe Program for the one-day Symposium will include 4 Keynote presentations from prominent international speakers (delivered via live streaming) and 10 additional invited speakers. The program will provide participants with opportunities to network and ample time for discussion. \nThe final Program will be released in October. \nNote that as the Symposium is part of PIANC’s APAC 2020 Conference\, registration is through the APAC2020 registration site.  Symposium attendees are encouraged\, if they can\, to register for the Symposium and the full conference. \nFor information about speakers please see https://www.pianc2020.com/pre-conference-symposium/
