SUMMARY:The Future of Physical Modelling an EA/PIANC Online Seminar 10 Dec 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Role Of Physical Modelling In Today’s World – Dr Steven Hughes\nCoastal and port engineers rely on four complimentary tools for the development of robust\, functioning projects: theoretical analyses\, numerical modeling\, physical modeling\, and field measurements. From the early days of coastal and port engineering physical modeling (including laboratory experimentation) has played a major role in advancing understanding and in effective design and construction. \nIt is important for experienced engineers\, as well as younger members of the profession and decision makers to at least understand both the advantages and limitations of physical models. \nThis webinar\, hosted by the National Committee Coastal and Ocean Engineering\, PIANC Australia and New Zealand\, and Engineers Australia\, will examine the role of physical modeling in today’s world with a look toward the future. After a short introduction describing the underlying principles of physical modeling\, typical modern-day model uses will be discussed\, along with specific examples of how physical models contributed to successful projects. We will explore current worldwide trends in physical modeling that illustrate the continued importance of this engineering tool. \nFrom there\, we will step back from physical modeling and share opinions on several challenges faced by coastal and port engineers now and in the future. These topics include: climate change; maintaining the knowledge base; erosion of expertise; and perhaps most importantly\, learning from engineering practitioners. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. \n  \nSpeaker: Dr. Steven A. Hughes \nDr. Steven A. Hughes was awarded this year the 2020 John G. Moffatt-Frank E. Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award for his definitive contribution over 47 years to the field of harbor and coastal engineering across research\, investigations\, design and construction. \nDr. Hughes has been the consummate public servant as a research engineer\, applications engineer and educator. He is considered a top tier coastal engineer and scientist throughout the international engineering community. His book “Physical Models and Laboratory Techniques in Coastal Engineering” published in 1993 remains a definitive reference for practicing coastal and port professionals. \nDr. Hughes has attained numerous accolades throughout his esteemed career with the US Army Corps of Engineers. In 2017 Steve was inducted into the Waterways Experiment Station Gallery of Distinguished Employees\, one of the highest honours bestowed on only a few of the USACE research community.

SUMMARY:PIANC APAC 2020 - Pre-Conference Symposium: Nature-based Solutions 1 Dec 2020
DESCRIPTION:Pre-APAC 2020 Conference Symposium:\nNature-based Solutions for Coasts\, Ports\, and Estuaries\nDate: 1 December 2020\nTime: 0830 – 1730 AWST\nVenue: Esplanade Hotel Fremantle (WA participants)\,\nLive Streamed (non-WA participants)\nProtecting populations and infrastructure within our coasts\, ports and estuaries is a major challenge in this era of rapid environmental change. To address this challenge\, in recent years there has been growing focus on adopting nature-based solutions in flooding and erosion risk management projects. \nThese solutions use natural processes and ecosystems\, to provide an alternative\,’ green infrastructure’\, form of protection. Such ecosystems include reefs\, wetlands\, submerged aquatic vegetation\, mangroves\, as well as hybrid approaches that integrate both traditional and nature-based approaches. \nThis exciting Symposium will bring together a range of multi-disciplinary groups\, including engineering\, planning\, restoration ecology\, resource economics\, and policy experts\, to discuss recent international developments in successful nature-based solutions for coastal\, port and estuary applications. \nThe Symposium will highlight the latest innovations worldwide\, lessons learnt\, and implementation challenges from users across a spectrum of backgrounds – from researchers to practitioners to end users. It will provide essential knowledge and leadership for the future. \nThe Program for the one-day Symposium will include 4 Keynote presentations from prominent international speakers (delivered via live streaming) and 10 additional invited speakers. The program will provide participants with opportunities to network and ample time for discussion. \nThe final Program will be released in October. \nNote that as the Symposium is part of PIANC’s APAC 2020 Conference\, registration is through the APAC2020 registration site.  Symposium attendees are encouraged\, if they can\, to register for the Symposium and the full conference. \nFor information about speakers please see https://www.pianc2020.com/pre-conference-symposium/

SUMMARY:PIANC APAC 2020 - Inaugural Asia Pacific Conference 1- 4 Dec 2020
DESCRIPTION:“Port\, harbour and recreational boating for today and tomorrow”\n\nThe APAC2020 Conference will be held on 1 – 4 December\, 2020\, with the pre-Conference Symposium taking place on Tuesday 1 December\, followed by the Conference Welcome reception in the evening.   Detailed Conference program here.\nThis new biennial conference series will focus on harbours\, ports and recreational boating in the Asia Pacific region.  Our 2020 Conference theme “Port\, harbour and recreational boating for today and tomorrow” reflects the growing worldwide recognition to place the natural environment at the forefront of every project as well as a growing emphasis on a licence to operate. \nWith the current border closures preventing some speakers and delegates from being able to travel to Perth\, PIANC and the Local Organising Committee have decided to implement a hybrid Conference model. The hybrid Conference will consist of a face-to-face Conference at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle\, coupled with a live stream of the program so that both in-person and remote delegates can attend and present. By offering a hybrid model we can be more inclusive and welcoming to a larger community who may not be able to attend in person due to travel\, budget or other restrictions. Conference fees have been adjusted for online attendees. \nRevised Key Dates: \n14 August 2020 Abstract Submission (Round 2) Deadline (midnight AEDT)\n28 August 2020 Authors advised of Submission Outcome\n25 September 2020 Speaker Registration Deadline\n18 October 2020 Earlybird Registration Closes \nConference Themes: \nClimate Change Impacts and Adaptation\nCoastal Processes and Risk Implications\nDredging and Reclamation\nEconomic\, Social\, Legal and Political Aspects\nEnvironmental Aspects and Ecosystem Services\nNavigation\nPort Planning\nPorts and Marine Facilities – Design and Construction\nRecreational Facilities\, Waterfront Development and Marinas\nSustainability\, and Stakeholder Engagement\nWorking with Nature \nRegister here for the Conference \n\nPIANC APAC 2020 will bring together engineers\, planners\, scientists and researchers to focus on the technological\, scientific\, policy\, planning and design issues related to our diverse and developing ports\, harbours and recreational boating facilities.\nThe first in an eminent conference series\, PIANC APAC 2020 will be hosted at the Hotel Esplanade in the vibrant city of Fremantle\, Western Australia on 1-4 Dec 2020.\nDuring the Conference\, PIANC APAC 2020 will incorporate concurrent streams facilitating the opportunity for discussion and networking.
